Severance Wrestling Impresses at Top of the Rockies

This past weekend, the Severance Varsity Wrestling Team took on some of the toughest competition in the region at the Top of the Rockies tournament. The event was a true test of skill, grit, and perseverance, and the Silver Knights delivered memorable performances across the board.

Leading the charge was Drake VomBaur, who defended his title and earned the Outstanding Wrestler Award for the lightweight division. Meanwhile, other wrestlers showed incredible fight, resilience, and skill in every match they wrestled.

Drake VomBaur: Back-to-Back Champion

Drake VomBaur proved why he’s one of the best wrestlers in Colorado, cruising to his second straight Top of the Rockies title with a mix of dominant technical performances and clutch victories.

  • Round 2: After a first-round bye, Drake kicked off his tournament with a statement, pinning Ezekiel Ortiz (Fort Lupton) in just 2:39. His relentless attack and ability to finish moves were on full display.

  • Quarterfinal: Drake showed his technical superiority with a 19-3 tech fall over Micah Bautista (Central - Grand Junction) in 2:42, racking up points with ease.

  • Semifinal: Against Anthony Franco (Rocky Ford), one of the state’s top competitors, Drake once again dominated, earning a 21-6 tech fall in 3:49. His precision and composure under pressure were unmatched.

  • Finals: In the championship match, Drake faced JR Ortega (Grandview) in a thrilling, tightly contested battle. Drake secured a 3-1 decision, showcasing his ability to rise to the occasion when it mattered most.

Drake’s performance earned him the Outstanding Wrestler Award, cementing his place as a top-tier competitor in the state and beyond.


Simon Carter (106 lbs): Battling Through the Bracket

Simon Carter showed his fighting spirit, clawing his way through the consolation bracket after a tough second-round loss.

  • Round 2: After a first-round bye, Simon faced Alex Herburger (Pueblo East) and suffered a tough loss by fall in 3:48.

  • Cons. Round 3: Simon rebounded with a vengeance, pinning Carter Harryman (Riverdale Ridge) in just 1:00.

  • Cons. Round 4: Simon displayed his technical skills in a 13-5 major decision over the 2A #1 Ranked Emilio Vallejos (Rocky Ford), controlling the match from start to finish.

  • Cons. Round 5: Simon’s run ended in a hard-fought bout against Eli Archibeque (Rio Rancho), falling by pin in 3:48.


Jaxon Felker (120 lbs): Consistency and Grit

Jaxon Felker delivered a strong performance, winning four matches in one of the tournament’s toughest brackets.

  • Round 1: Jaxon started strong with a 9-0 major decision over Keegan Sturgeon (Arvada West), using a combination of takedowns and nearfall points.

  • Round 2: Faced Julian Espinoza (Pueblo East) and fell to a 15-0 tech fall in 4:26.

  • Cons. Round 3: Jaxon came back strong, pinning Keelan Pinsonneault (Erie) in 2:05.

  • Cons. Round 4: He followed with a lightning-fast pin against Milo Mowen (Boulder) in just 0:58.

  • Cons. Round 5: In a gritty battle, Jaxon edged Jeremiah Waldschmidt (Ponderosa) with a 4-3 decision, showcasing his composure under pressure.

  • Cons. Round 6: Jaxon’s tournament ended in a narrow 6-3 decision loss to Trace Eldridge (Cheyenne East).


Dennis Campos (126 lbs): Strong Start, Tough Finish

Dennis Campos opened his tournament with a thrilling victory before facing tough opponents in later rounds.

  • Round 1: Dennis edged Brogan Bartholomew (Chaparral) in an 8-5 decision, showing great tactical awareness.

  • Round 2: He fell to Jack Simpson (Ponderosa) by fall in 0:34.

  • Cons. Round 3: Dennis bounced back with a close 8-6 decision over Rocky Roybal (Rocky Mountain).

  • Cons. Round 4: His run ended against Kyden Silz (Pomona), falling by pin in 3:00.


Reed Green (150 lbs): Resilience and Strength

Reed Green battled through the consolation bracket, picking up multiple wins and showcasing his strength and determination.

  • Round 2: After a first-round bye, Reed faced Hunter Waneka (Erie) and dropped a 7-2 decision.

  • Cons. Round 3: Reed came back strong, pinning Landon Hetrick (Legacy) in 1:18.

  • Cons. Round 4: He earned a gritty 7-3 decision over Aaron Huntoon (Chaparral).

  • Cons. Round 5: Reed secured another pin, this time in just 0:50 against Jacob Daniel (Rocky Mountain).

  • Cons. Round 6: Reed’s tournament ended with a 14-2 major decision loss to Tripp Vigil (Central).


Other Wrestlers: Fighting Hard

  • Andre Salinas (132 lbs): Andre started strong with a 14-6 major decision over Micah Keller (Thompson Valley) and later added a close 12-11 decision against Jack Williams (Erie) before bowing out in the third consolation round.

  • Brody Vondy (285 lbs): Brody earned a quick 51-second pin over Ryan Collins (Clay) in the consolation bracket, showcasing his strength and potential.


Takeaways from the Tournament

The Top of the Rockies was an incredible opportunity for Severance wrestlers to test their skills against elite competition. Drake VomBaur’s championship and Outstanding Wrestler Award were the highlights, but every wrestler showed heart and determination on the mat.
